WINES

At just over 200 miles from Cecil County, Deep Creek Lake is a wonderful vacation spot on the other end of Maryland. A number of vacationers are surprised to find a winery located just minutes from the Lake. Deep Creek Cellars is a small, family owned winery producing top quality wines. Paul Roberts, owner and wine maker, published a book about his experiences. When you're at the winery ask about the book. Also keep a keen eye out for Norton, a grape that is only used by a handful of wineries in the United States, especially those in Missouri.

Paul was also discussing his interest in growing Frontenac, a hearty grape currently grown in Minnesota. Frontenac was developed for the harsh weather of the upper Mid-west, according to the Minnesota Grape Growers Association the red and white varieties are able to survive in temperatures of at least -30°F! This was ironically the lowest recorded temperature in Friendsville, Maryland in January 1994¹. We'll keep an eye on the progress of Frontenac at Deep Creek Cellars.
