WINESAt just over 200 miles from Cecil County, Deep Creek Lake is a wonderful vacation spot on the other end of Maryland. A number of vacationers are surprised to find a winery located just minutes from the Lake. Deep Creek Cellars is a small, family owned winery producing top quality wines. Paul Roberts, owner and wine maker, published a book about his experiences. When you're at the winery ask about the book. Also keep a keen eye out for Norton, a grape that is only used by a handful of wineries in the United States, especially those in Missouri. Above: Tasting room entrance. Wines available from Deep Creek Cellars include Blue Dolce, Glad Run Rose, Watershed Red Reserve, Old Vine Zinfandel, Summer Claret, Ursa Major, White Linen Reserve, Yellow Jacket White, Artisan Red and Artisan White. Most of these wines are regularly stocked at Cherry Hill Liquors but call or email to confirm availability. To check out Deep Creek's wine descriptions click HERE. Among others, the Cabernet Franc from 2007's harvest are being barrel aged. Click here and take a minute to read about Cabernet Franc at Deep Creek Cellars. Above: View from atop the winery's 2 acre vineyard at about 2100 feet. Paul was also discussing his interest in growing Frontenac, a hearty grape currently grown in Minnesota. Frontenac was developed for the harsh weather of the upper Mid-west, according to the Minnesota Grape Growers Association the red and white varieties are able to survive in temperatures of at least -30°F! This was ironically the lowest recorded temperature in Friendsville, Maryland in January 1994¹. We'll keep an eye on the progress of Frontenac at Deep Creek Cellars. Should you have any questions about this winery (or any other) please call or email. Greg@Gregs-Wines.com This page was last updated on May 30, 2008. |
