Loew Vineyards

On Tuesday, July 31st Greg traveled to Loew Vineyards in Mount Airy, Frederick County, Maryland. Several times each year the 172 mile round trip journey is undertaken to this particular area of Maryland. Within just a ten minute drive of Loew Vineyards there are three other wineries. About twenty minutes away from Loew Vineyards there are two additional wineries making this particular region the most concentrated area for winemaking within Maryland. A lot of wine was brought back to the store in Greg's new pickup (powered by E-85, Ethanol). Support America's farmers!

Chardonnay grapes hanging from the trellis in the vineyard. The grapes are coming along very well this year. After stealing a taste of a grape it was judged that these grapes are on track to making great wine and were just a bit less sweet than your typical table grape. In case you're wondering, they are not seedless.

These Chancellor grapes you will notice are on their way to ripening and harvest in September. Upon close inspection there are still a few grapes that haven't developed their color but they will!

Watching the weather is very important at a winery. The rain gauge shown here indicates that this area has not received any rain lately. Outside of the tasting room there is a barometer and thermometer. The post serves as the end of the row of vines and it supports the trellis work.

Notice that this is farm country. Located on adjoining properties there are fields of corn. To scare the deer that roam the area the Loew's have a radio in the vineyard. To help deter the birds some rows of vines are covered in a netting.
