TRÖEGS BREWERYLocation: Harrisburg, PA Date: 27 October 2007 As a retailer of alcohol we often receive invitations to special events at breweries, wineries and sometimes at distilleries. This particular event was the Tröegs Brewery 10th Anniversary Celebration: The Flying Mouflan Experience. This is when Tröegs serves their "scratch" beers, beers brewed in very limited quantities to complement the brewery experience and to reminisce about the brewery founders past home brewing experiences. Each beer in the scratch series sells out within weeks! At the 2007 Great American Beer Festival one of Tröegs beers won an impressive gold medal, click here to read more! Above: Posters at the brewery advertise their "Mad
Elf" holiday beer, a season ale brewed with cherries and honey. Above: A fermenting tank with a temperature gauge showing 64.9ºF. At this temperature there is surely an ale being made in this tank. Lagers ferment at much lower temperatures! Above: Chaddsford Wine barrels being reused at the brewery to ferment "Triple". Many smaller breweries use barrels to ferment and/or age their beers. Allagash Brewery, in Maine makes a beer known as Curieux which is aged in barrels from world famous bourbon producer Jim Beam. Breweries making use of barrels often produce smaller quantities of beer and focus their attention on quality. Above: Mad Elf 101 ounce bottles at the filling station. Above: Curious about how much kegs weigh? At Tröegs a 15.5 gallon (aka half-keg) weighs about 165 pounds! Above: Stored inside the giant cooler at Tröegs are boxes and boxes of hops. This box indicates the hops inside came from Yakima, Washington. Washington State is the United State's leading producer of hops, followed by Oregon and Idaho. Last updated November 11, 2007. |
